Nova Scotia going silent
At the top of today's COVID report from the province is a note. "There are no scheduled COVID-19 media briefings this week," it says. "Due to the Panorama upgrade happening today, July 19, the daily COVID-19 news release and COVID-19 data dashboard will not be available Tuesday, July 20."
This is a double-duty note, with two different bits of news. First, premier Iain Rankin and top doc Robert Strang aren't going to hold any of their standard COVID briefings this week. We learned last week that Rankin would stop doing briefings after the election call, which came Saturday, although it's a bit of a surprise to find out Strang won't do any himself this week. Maybe he's getting a well-earned vacation before taking the briefings by himself next week.
Second, the Panorama public health tracking system is getting some kind of upgrade today, so the province isn't going to report any COVID case numbers tomorrow. Watch for new, freshly upgraded statistics on Wednesday.

One person recovered since yesterday's report—the patient lives in the South Shore community health network according to our map and table of Nova Scotia's health networks. That recovery pushes the provincial caseload down to seven active cases of COVID. Five of the known cases are in the Halifax network, two are in Sydney/Glace Bay and the other 12 networks are currently free of COVID.
Today is the seventh straight day that two people are in hospital due to COVID, with one of them severe enough to be in intensive care rather than a standard COVID ward. The province always refuses to say if it's been the same two people all week—that knowledge would apparently constitute a violation of patient privacy—but the province publishes statistics about the number of people admitted to hospital and ICU, and those numbers haven't changed in over a week, so we are confident saying it has indeed been the same two people. We hope they manage a safe recovery.
Provincial labs only processed 2,022 tests yesterday, more than 20 percent below the current daily average.
Vaccination clinics delivered 16,652 doses into arms between Friday, Saturday and Sunday, for an average of just 5,550 doses per day. That's surprisingly low, considering how fast the vax rollout has been moving. Thursday alone saw nearly 17,500 injections given, more than the three weekend days combined. And the weekend before last totalled over 32,000 jabs, nearly double this weekend. But this weekend had over 2,000 people get their first dose, which is more than the nearly 1,900 the weekend before, so there is a glimmer of gold in the otherwise crappy vaccine numbers.
As the vaccination rate chart at the bottom of this page shows, according to provincial numbers 49.95 percent of all Nova Scotians have received two doses of vaccine, and 74.63 percent of the province has at least one dose. But these figures don't include the 8,000 vaccinated military personnel chief medical officer of health Robert Strang has informed the province about.
Map of cases in community health networks
This infographic was created by The Coast using daily case data from Nova Scotia's official COVID-19 dashboard. Our goal is for this to be the best NS COVID map around, clearer and more informative than the province or any other media organization provides. To get there we do an analysis of the data to find each day's new and resolved case numbers in the 14 community health networks, information the province does not provide. For a different but still highly accessible approach to the latest COVID statistics, check out our case table.

Case table of the health networks
The Coast uses data logged from Nova Scotia's official COVID-19 dashboard in order to provide this tabulated breakdown. The province reports the number of active cases in each of Nova Scotia's 14 community health networks, but we do the math to be able to report the new and resolved case numbers. We also map the data to provide a different view of the case information.

New and active cases visualized
This interactive graph charts COVID activity in Nova Scotia's third wave, comparing daily new cases with that day’s active caseload. The dark line tracks the rise and fall of new infections reported by the province, which hit a Nova Scotian pandemic record high of 227 cases in a single day on May 7. The green area is the province's caseload, which peaked May 10 at 1,655 active cases. Click or however over any point on the graph and the detail for that moment will pop up. To focus on just new or active cases, you can click the legend at the top left of the graph to hide or reveal that data set.

Vaccination in the population
How many Nova Scotians already have one dose of vaccine? How many are fully vaccinated with two doses? And how close are we to the herd immunity goal of 75 percent of the province fully vaxxed? These questions are answered in our chart of the vaccination rate in Nova Scotia since the province started reporting these numbers in January 2021, breaking out people who've had a single dose separate from those who've had the full complement of two doses. (Here's more information about the 75 percent target and what it will take to get there.) Note: The province doesn't update vaccination numbers on weekends.
