"In '89, there wasn't much going on here," says Jeans and Gents Clothing Company (2816 Windsor, at Almon) owner David Kaulback about the corner where you can find his 20-year-old shop, just down from the Halifax Forum. "The original building owner said he'd give me a good deal on the rent and I could stay here until he died." Unfortunately, the gentleman in question did pass away, and the inheritor of the building appeared at the door to Kaulback's shop on December 27 of this past year. "I thought he was coming by with a Christmas card," says Kaulback. It was an eviction notice. "So, for no reason, we're going." Jeans and Gents Clothing Company closes its doors on April 1.
Kaulback is considering trying to find a new location for his cool, new and mildly used clothing store, its walls lined with jeans, jackets and apparel. He keeps a binder full of people's requests for pea coats, designer jeans and leather goods and he calls the customer when he's been able to find what's needed. Clearly, there are plenty of things still needed. "It's hard to find the right place with the right atmosphere," he says. Watch this space for more information, as we get it.
A door north, Bikes By Dave (2828 Windsor, 455-1677) is staying put at least through the summer, but a door south, the delightfully cluttered Almanac Used Furniture and Antiques (2810 Windsor, 455-1141) is also closing after 18 years.
