Stranger things: five oddball summer events

Nothing says summer like mind readers and doggos

1. Wienerpawlooza 2017
Wiener lovers unite! This charity event for the Atlantic Canadian Dachshund Rescue will feature fun (freaking adorable) stuff like wiener races, best costume awards, a kissing booth (wow) and offers this disclaimer: “Dachshunds are small in size but can be big in attitude.” So don’t bring your big dogs and ruin the whole thing, OK?
June 25, Shubie Park, 54 Locks Road 11am-3pm

2. Mystic Adventure Psychic Cruise
Two-and-a-half hours on a 130-foot schooner with 10 psychics and an infinite amount of answers. This mystic sailing adventure offers up psychic meet and greets, a “message circle” (group psychic reading), plus a cash bar and some snacks.
July 16, Tall Ship Silva, Sackville Wharf, $75 tickethalifax.com

3. Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience
The Long Island Medium herself brings her talents and her unique hair to Halifax, to help the citizens of our town commune with the dead.
August 6-7, Scotiabank Centre, 1800 Argyle Street, 7:30pm, $40-$105, ticketatlantic.com

4. The Olate Dogs
These adorable rescue pups were the proud winners of America’s Got Talent, and a look at their impressive live show—including conga lines, feats of agility and strength and a surprising sense of rhythm—explains why. VIP ticketholders get to meet the dogs, so don’t sleep on that.
August 18, Spatz Theatre, 1855 Trollope Street 7pm, $39.50-29, tickethalifax.com

5. Clam Harbour Beach Sandcastle Competition
You would think there isn’t anything that weird about a sand castle building competition, until you see what these folks can do with sand. It’s bonkers, man. Head to Clam Harbour Beach for this annual rain-or-shine (somehow) gathering and see what these beach architects are made of. Or try to build something yourself, but good luck, Picasso. Amateur hour, it ain’t.
August 20, Clam Harbour Beach, $10 halifax.ca/sandcastle
