Recently Engaged: Sarah & David

Surprised in New Zealand at a favourite Narnia film location.

I'm a little slow on the uptake when it comes to romantic gestures. The first time that David asked me out, I didn't know it was a date until after it was over! I hadn't dated much, and my friend Laura had to analyse the evening for me.

Did he look nervous?
"Kind of?" was my response.
Did he pay for everything?
"Yeah, but he could have just been being nice!" I retorted.
Well, do you want it to be a date?
"...Yes. Absolutely."
After a month of casual dating, we were inseparable. Aboard a Metro Transit bus one day, we officially applied the boyfriend/girlfriend labels.

David's from New Zealand, so the first time he introduced me to his parents was via Skype. In February, 2010, we flew to New Zealand so I could meet his family in person. A few days into the trip, we made an excursion to Cathedral Cove. I had really wanted to visit this spot in particular - it was used as a film location for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (you know the scene when they're standing in the subway station and it disappears and they're on a beach? That cave). I was really excited, and wasn't even paying attention to David as he rummaged around in his bag - I was spellbound by the breathtaking scenery around me. When I finally noticed what he was doing, he was down on one knee.

"There's something I've been wanting to ask you... Will you marry me?" he asked. "...oh dear!" I said (yes, I really said that). Then I burst into happy tears and said yes. I might not be all that bright when it comes to romance, but David's got enough romantic smarts for the two of us - it was a perfect proposal.

We're getting married on August 19th, 2011, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.
