Zero 7

The Garden

Zero 7
The Garden
(Atlantic)
A few notable things are happening on the third album from British outfit Zero 7, led by producer/composers Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker. First, the group has picked up the pace. The Garden is full of uptempo pop tunes. The band moves into Morcheeba’s territory, marrying the sweet soul and R&B of the late ’60s and early ’70s with modern pop/rock sensibilities. The lyrics tell of world-weary people trying to find peace and love in a chaotic world. The singers are the other cool thing happening here: Sia Furler, who has sung on all three records, has matured into a powerhouse, while José Gonzalez crosses Shuggie Otis with Eliott Smith.
