Young Adult Cancer Canada sponsors 50/50 screening

Young Adult Cancer Canada is offering free tickets to a screening of 50/50, the Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Seth Rogen dramedy based on screenwriter Will Reiser's fight with cancer in his mid-20s. The screening is at Park Lane, 7:10pm on Wednesday, October 5. Survivors can get tickets here: giveorget.ca. The site also allows people to donate money so a survivor can go and check it out.

Interestingly, though YACC is clearly encouraging people to see the film to engender discussion, the organization's executive director Geoff Eaton says that though there's plenty about the film he liked, he says it misses the boat in one key area:

“While 50/50 may be the reality for the screenwriter, it is what you don’t see that concerns me," he writes in a release. "The average movie-goer won’t understand that isolation is the number one issue facing young adults with cancer post-diagnosis. Adam’s experience of not connecting with another young adult is typical, another example of the film’s authenticity. The absence of this reality explicitly within the film will leave the uninformed misinformed.”

A screening amongst peers does seem like a step towards a solution to that issue.
