You Don't Mess with the Zohan | Arts & Culture | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Adam Sandler is supposed to be an Israeli immigrant in You Don't Mess with the Zohan, but really, he's playing a space alien. A Mossad fighter-turned-hair stylist, Zohan (Sandler) brags about the size of his pube-afro, hacky-sacks a kitten and wows New Yorkers with his flexibility in street fights. It's hard to find anything profound in Zohan's take on Israel vs Palestine conflict. The "everybody-just-get-along" message comes honestly from Sandler, who's had a sincere warmth in his comedies since shedding his '90s fratboy image. The movie's appeal is moderated because the funny gags are accompanied by a lot of unfunny ones. A cross between Borat and Coming to America, Sandler never finds You Don't Mess with the Zohan's shape as a political comedy.
