Think about what you were doing when you were a fresh-faced 17-year-old. Prom planning? Sneaking beers with your friends? Studying? Whatever it was, I bet it wasn't headlining cross-country tours (but if it was, dang, maybe I should be writing about you) and setting the blogosphere abuzz with your super chill indie-electro beats. But, that's exactly the scene that Orlando-based producer Marcel Everett has set, ever since he started sampling vocals, crafting synths from scratch and experimenting with simple but smoothly minimal soundscapes—darker beats that capture something almost otherworldly in his self-titled album XXYYXX (out last March on Relief in Abstract Records). It's impressive work that's garnered him comparisons to The Weeknd while Interview magazine heralded him as a bridger of ubiquitous genres like dubstep, chillwave and trap rap—maybe just proving that he has a hard style to pin down exactly, but it's a pretty awesome one. Get on board.
