with love Sure Thing

When: Jan. 7-Feb. 14 2010
When curator Fionnuala Reynolds asked artists to work with a pre-Valentine theme for a group exhibition, 12 artists stepped up to the chocolate-covered plate. Dijon Curley, Sharon Davis, Philip Doucette, Dee Gibson, Renee Forrestall, Kyle Jackson, Erin Laende, Michael Lewis, Leah Mullins, Wendy Shirran, Heather Snider and Jessica Winton took the theme home with them and interpreted the notion of love, trying new ideas and techniques. "It really is something for everyone," says Reynolds of the exhibition. "There's a light-heartedness carried throughout the show, which I believe makes it accessible to a larger audience." Among the pieces Reynolds singles out are folk artist Kyle Jackson's horns, including one called "Push" that, if you push it, plays the recording: "Hey baby, still like me? Why don't you come over and give me a big squeeze?" Philip Doucette, a master artisan in glasswork, played on the Cinderella theme of glass slippers with his three boxed glassworks titled "The Ballroom After Midnight" one, two and three. Each box encapsulates metal work that represents the movement of couples dancing, all on multi-coloured checked floors. Valentine's day is your curfew to see the magic. –Holly Gordon
