Wintersleep

New Inheritors (Labwork)

Welcome to the Night Sky was kind of a big deal for Wintersleep, turning the Halifax fivesome into a Juno-winning, McCartney-opening minor juggernaut. Lest you worry that a taste of success changes bands, or that the pressure of following it up would get to them, New Inheritors arrives sounding, well, like a Wintersleep record. If anything, it’s a more immediate, live-sounding album, which may disappoint those hoping for an expanded canvas. But when the walls of guitar fold together with Paul Murphy’s unmistakable voice, and the choruses of tracks like “Blood Collection” and “Trace Decay” connect, you’re reminded just why Wintersleep, playing a sold-out show this Thursday (see page 13), became our minor juggernaut in the first place.
