Why Dartmouth? | Restaurant Reviews | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Rae Kraushar, owner of Nectar Social House, wanted a challenge. Somehow, working 80 hour weeks trying to get downtown Dartmouth on the dining map seemed like a good one. A former production designer, she got bored with the film business and decided to start her new career in her old neighbourhood.

"Dartmouth needed a restaurant and the family business is next door." Rae's mother and brother have run Interlude spa since 1987. If it wasn't for family, she admits, she probably wouldn't have opened Nectar on Ochterloney street. "We have a good clientele from and they have given us a support system."

In fact, Rae's mother introduced her to David Clark, the Chef at Nectar. Clark worked previously as a sous chef at Fiasco for the last three years and did a long stint at Cafe Michelle when it was on Portland Street.

Between a busy lunch crowd and downtown Dartmouth's changing age demographic, Kraushar might onto something. "I've probably heard it a thousand times since I've opened - 'this is exactly what Dartmouth needed.'"

Nectar Social House is applying for a lounge license for their front part of their restaurant. If it's approved on October 14, maybe Nectar will become a full social house.
