Whirligig shooting now

Chaz Thorne's latest, starring Gregory Smith, wraps up March 26.

If you happen out around Three Fathom Harbour or in the other direction down Herring Cove Road to Portuguese Cove, you might spot a film crew hunkering down to do its thing. That would be the homegrown production Whirligig, directed by Chaz Thorne, the filmmaker who wrote and directed Just Buried starring current Hollywood it-geek Jay Baruchel (She’s Out Of My League, How To Train Your Dragon, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, The Trotsky) and Damages’ Rose Byrne. Thorne was also the writer-producer on another local production, Poor Boy’s Game. This new work was written by Dartmouth’s Michael Amo, who is also serving as a producer, along with David MacLeod. Described as a “fresh, irreverent comedy,” the story follows Nicholas (Gregory Smith, formerly of the TV drama Everwood), a 20-something guy who moves back home with his parents in a rural Nova Scotian community---who aren’t keen to see him---before getting involved with an older woman and her son who live nearby. The 20-day shoot for the feature film is scheduled to wrap on March 26.

Survey Asks

Should council use the yet-to-be-finalized Centre Plan when debating new developments?

  • No, it doesn’t exist yet and is still likely to change
  • Yes, thousands of hours of work and consultation have gone into what’s already assembled
  • Maybe, it really depends on what’s being proposed by the developer
  • I don’t know what the Centre Plan is and do not wish to participate in this poll
