Vivek Shraya has asked everyone from Sook-Yin Lee to Tegan Quin, and now he wants to know what Halifax loves about being queer. He's in town for the Outeast Film Festival, screening his film What I LOVE About Being Queer, giving an artist talk, as well reading from his book God Loves Hair at Over Easy: the OUTeast Awards brunch (June 23). "One of the big inspirations for What I LOVE About Being QUEER was conversations I had in my day job as positive space coordinator at George Brown College with queer youth whose experiences of homophobia/transphobia or even a lack of acceptance from family turns into a kind of self-hate." What I LOVE About Being Queer is screening on loop during the weekend of the festival in the lobby of Scotiabank Theatre. Shraya invites locals to have their photo taken, and write what they love about being queer on an index card. "As someone who also struggled with a similar kind of self-hate when I was first coming out, I wanted to create something that provided a different perspective on queerness," says Shraya. "To show the ways this complicated part of who we are is also something to celebrate." --Shannon Webb-Campbell
