“It’s my first time going outside of my own discipline,” says flamenco dancer Megan Matheson Hamilton.

"I went through this creative period where i was also songwriting, it came out of nowhere," says Megan Matheson Hamilton, the flamenco dancer known as La Azulita. "We did it with the flamenco group, but I could picture it with a beat behind it and an MC rapping over it, giving insight to the Spanish lyrics." Hamilton reached out to Craig Mercer (Scientists of Sound) for the beat, and Tracey Williams AKA Tacktishon from Universal Soul, on the mic. Hamilton and Williams will perform the piece, "Y Vas (and they go)," this weekend at DANSpace as part of Kinetic Studio's Open Studio Series.

"It's my first time going outside of my own discipline," says Hamilton, a former member of El Viento Flamenco who heads her own troupe, Compañía Azul. "Mercer and Tracey are such good friends which made it more comfortable for me. More challenging for me was the choreogeaphy—I thought that would come more easily, to choreograph something that's not flamenco. Every time I go down to rehearse it I do it differently. But I'm still dancing flamenco," she adds, laughing. "I'm not a hip-hop dancer. It's definitely in that genre still, since that's what I do."

These cross-disciplinary performance opportunities are something Kinetic, primarily a dance organization, has been pushing for years in an effort to increase exposure across all artistic genres. "Kinetic is presenting things that are on the edge, they're not going to want to just present a flamenco performance," says Hamilton. "This was a really great avenue to do something new and connect with their audiences."
