Volunteers make it work

To the editor,

If you read some of the recent press coverage about CKDU-FM's recent funding drive it would be easy to get think the station is made up of the paid staff and a bunch of volunteers. It would seem the volunteers do programs and the staff make decisions and are responsible for everything, except the failure of the funding drive. This isn't how it is. The station is a society made up of members who decide collectively how the society is to be run. One of these decisions was to hire staff to help organize and run the station. We try to hire competent, capable people who are expected to make decisions, be leaders and so on—the staff work for and answer to the members, not vice versa.

According to last week's "Gasping for air" article, Michael Catano, the station coordinator, says due to the failure of the funding drive, cuts will be made to the spoken word coordinator's time and consequently to special programming. The members, not the staff, decide this. While staff are hired in part to help coordinate programming, they are not necessary to do it. If one of the consequences of decreased revenue is a smaller staff, with some 200 members we should be able to organize committees or working groups among ourselves. No one discussed in the article the obvious issue of why was the goal set so high. We haven't made that goal in the previous four drives.
