Vigil

Whether or not you enjoy Morris Panych’s Vigil will depend greatly upon how much you enjoy black humour. At the matinee performance I attended, the majority of the audience was laughing uproariously, while the couple ahead of me squirmed and stared at their hands. I found this challenging work a pure delight, both because of the brilliant writing and the brilliant performances. Graham Percy is spectacular as the pathologically self-absorbed nephew who comes sit vigil to his dying aunt’s side. And Jenny Munday makes the almost-wordless aunt amazingly expressive. Her basilisk stare speaks volumes. Although the plot is absurd, the play has a lot to say about the transformative power of love. Don’t miss this little gem! –Kate Watson
