Gorgeous. Clever. Horrifying. Fantastical. Fun. These are all adjectives that could be used to describe Zuppa Theatre’s 10th anniversary remount of Uncle Oscar’s Experiment. The production is a beautifully choreographed feat of physical theatre, a humable, strumable musical mash-up (with a delightfully eclectic score by Jason Michael MacIsaac), a touching love story, and a gore-filled nod to the Grand Guignol theatre tradition all wrapped into one. Kiersten Tough is utterly charming as Felicity Luckless, a young girl surrounded by death who puts her trust in the brilliant and seemingly kind Uncle Oscar (played by Stewart Legere, who beautifully conveys Oscar’s creepy undercurrent). Ben Stone captures perfectly the vulnerability and confusion of Uncle Oscar’s innocent acolyte Gregory who’s torn between loyalty to his benefactor and blossoming love for Felicity. Sue Leblanc-Crawford is outstanding as a mysterious flame-haired angel. Mesmerizing and magical! —Kate Watson
