Tricky | Music | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

It’s been 15 years since Maxinquaye shook up the world and made “Bristol scene” and “trip-hop” oft-repeated phrases. Every few years Adrian Thawes, better known as Tricky, re-emerges in the hope of having the same impact. All swirly menace and admonition, “Ghetto Stars” echoes his peak period. Like everything on Mixed Race, it could be longer. It’s rare in this age of digital overkill to quibble about brevity. Could Mixed Race a be spoonful before a massive set of remixes? Muted trumpet, Arabic singer, a myriad of guests add to a grab-bag feel. “Murder Weapon” takes the “Peter Gunn” theme straight up without intervention. There’s a sense that Tricky is trying everything, while out of tricks.
