Hey everyone, my name is Hillary Titley - first-time Coast Fest blogger/old-hat Fest audience member. I have attended the festival both as a journalist and as a civilian, and, let me tell you, it is ten times better as a journalist. The experience can be summed up in three words: more finger-foods. Heaven!
Here are some of the movies I would check out, regardless of whether or not I had a lanyard:
International Picks: Frozen River and Man on Wire. Both these movies have garnered significant critical praise during their theatrical runs in the U.S.; Frozen River, a drama about trafficking people across the Quebec-Vermont border, apparently has a taunt script and a searing performance by star Melissa Leo, and Man On Wire, a doc about Phillippe Petit's 1974 tightrope walk between the World Trade Center's towers, is as awe-inspiring as it is stomach-churning.
Canadian Pick: Stone of Destiny. Technically, this is a Canadian/UK co-production about four University of Glasgow students who attempt to steal Scotland's Stone of Destiny from London's Westminster Abbey. They had me at the words "Scottish caper film."
Atlantic Picks: Cubers and Treevenge. Cubers is the doc about people who can solve a Rubik's Cube in under twenty-five seconds. After you watch the movie, Cube-kings Dan Knight and Matt Walter will be on hand to, well, solve the cubein under twenty-five seconds. Treevenge is pretty self-explanatory; it was made by the guys who made Hobo with a Shotgun.
