Tori Amos

Night of Hunters (Deutsche Grammophone)

This is the densest Amos offering yet, if you can believe it---a song cycle based on classical songs by the likes of Satie, Granados and Chopin, stretched around a love story involving Irish myths a fox called Annabelle (whose parts are sung by her daughter, Natashya; we are old). Matt Chamberlain fans will be disappointed---the record is beatless. “For fans only” has never been more appropriate, but it’s not as if Amos’ voice and playing are any less beautiful, her lyrics any less sharp and confounding, it’s just hard to find an entry point. It’s a noble project, but let’s hope she gets the band back together for the next one.
