North of America art and ephemera

There may not be a North of America reunion in your near future, but the next best thing can be found at RCHMND Shop (1876 Hollis) in Dissent in the Ranks, “an exhibition of artwork and ephemera associated with the band North of America” running until October 21. The show exhibits pieces and miscellany of special meaning to the band, found and assembled by one of the founding members, Mark Mullane and includes work from internationally acclaimed artists Chris Kline and Steve Keene (Silver Jews, Pavement, Apples in Stereo).

“It all came together rather quickly after a brief conversation with **Jonny Stevens** about contributing something to the 20th anniversary of the Pop Explosion. It all started with a photograph I took of our tour van on fire just outside Hamburg, Germany in 2003. That image is a large part of the legacy that was and is North of America,” says Mullane. “But then it just spiraled into me hunting down the original These Songs Are Cursed painting by Chris Kline (thank you Mary and Andy Pederson) and digging through my parents’ basement for other Norts knick knacks.”

Don’t we all wish our parents’ basement was full of Norts knick knacks, though?

“This show is comprised mostly of things I created, saved, or commissioned for the band aside from some classic gig posters whose origins are unknown,” says Mullane. Get your fill of all NoA nostalgia while you can because any tantalizing news about a reunion show is being held in a locked glove compartment in a van in Hamburg. “It'll be North of America's 20-year anniversary in 2018,” says Mullane. “That's about all I can tell you.”
