(Shack)
From the opening shimmer of acoustic guitar and deep, moody cello on “That’s How I Walk,” you are absolutely transfixed and moved by this album. Spare and simple, it’s songs in their most basic and beautiful form: stories set to music. “Fennell Square” is a great example for its look into the tortured and fleeting romance of a couple who’ve seen it all and lived large together. Lanois plays guitar, harmonica, harmonizes vocally (check out “Let Your Old Star In”) and co-produces. He and Wilson work tongue and groove, to quote a carpentry term. It’s an appropriate metaphor for an album cut in the Shack, a wonderfully warm pine abode in the middle of a forest near the Hammer — Hamilton, Ontario.
