Tick, Tick...BOOM!

Shane O’Regan has the illusive “it”. As Jonathan, the young composer fearfully facing his 30th birthday in Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick…BOOM! he displays an awesome talent and a poise way beyond his years. In fact, the two other actors in this play—Mikaela MacGillivray and Andrew Pelrine—are also remarkably gifted, vocally and dramatically. MacGillivray exudes confidence and sexuality and packs a mature powerhouse voice. Pelrine shows a real flare for comedy, and is perfectly cast as Jonathan’s best friend, an actor turned successful business man. The play is alive with rock-tinged music, ballads and dance tunes—my particular favourite is the clever “Therapy”, a kind of vocal dueling banjos. If you’ve never been across the bridge to Dartmouth Players, this production is the perfect reason to make the effort. As an added bonus: It’s air-conditioned! –Kate Watson
