Mocean Dance’s involvement with Fredericton-based choreographer Lesandra Dodson’s The Trilogy Project (presented by Live Art Dance January 17-19, 8pm, Sir James Dunn Theatre) isn’t only a world premiere, it marks the reunion of trusted collaborators.

The Trilogy Project features three duets—Her blameless mystery, In two days a man can change and A leash for two hounds—two of them starring Susanne Chui, Mocean’s artistic director. “One of the reasons Lesandra wanted to do the project was to explore the idea of duets. My solo is kind a duet with film and video featuring the writing of Emily Dickinson. So it’s kind of a female-female duet.”

This is the fourth time Chui has worked with Dodson. “She's like the first person I worked with after graduating, I’ve really been able to develop my ability to understand her movement style and aesthetic.”

Dodson has also worked with Mocean before, and this Thursday’s premiere of A leash for two hounds communicates what Chui calls her signature style. “She makes work that's layered with images and movements. A lot of the works have text, some have video. She likes to pare down ideas to essentials, she uses a lot of gestural movements and quick clipped fast paces. It’s in the realm of quirky, really fun and fast and unique.”

The Trilogy Project also features original music by Christine Fellows, film, animation and performance art, and performances by Darryl Tracy and Ric Brown.
