When: Fri., June 4, 8 p.m. and Sat., June 5, 3 & 8 p.m. 2010
Thirtysomething Dance Co-operative’s members have one thing in common: “We’re a bunch of adults who just can’t seem to give up the passion for getting on stage,” says Kate Hayter, the group’s artistic director. The strength is found in their differences, and this year it’s superhero strength. “We’ve had a very challenging year; we felt the need to be strong and celebrate being strong women so we came up with the idea of embracing your alter ego,” says Hayter, adding that a woman’s alter ego is what keeps her dancing, gets the kids to soccer practice on time and simply gets things done. The Thirtysomething ladies found their alter egos, gave themselves names and raided Value Village---or their own closets---for costumes. Hayter’s alter ego? “Commander Bossy Pants,” she laughs, explaining that her tap dance students chose her name. “I end up in charge a lot, and bossing people around a lot, with a nice tone of voice. Instead of always apologizing for it I just decided to embrace it.” Other superhero alter egos in the 16-member group include Sonic Spaz and Doctor Think the Superhero Shrink (above, right). You have two days to discover the rest, who will be performing in work by guest choreographers Rhonda Baker and Kathleen Vessey, as well as work from members of Thirtysomething. –Holly Gordon
