The Woman in Black

When: Feb. 5-22 2014

I find it charming that in this age of big budget gore-fests, an old-fashioned ghost story set at the turn of the century can still have the audience shivering in their seats. Written as a play-within-a-play, The Woman in Black stars Jesse Robb as an aging solicitor who asks an actor (James MacLean) for help in exorcising a long-held terror of a past event by making the story ready to share with an audience. MacLean is pitch-perfect in his role, and Robb, a very good actor, does a masterful job of portraying a stiff and introverted performer. The lighting and sound effects are sophisticated and effective, as are the set and costume design. The twist at end elicited real gasps of horror. This Dartmouth Players production is a spine-tingling treat. —Kate Watson
