The wild Jungle Book

Neptune's holiday show is lush, colourful and perfect for kids.

Mowgli and Ballo

It's almost as much fun watching the kids in the audience as it is watching Neptune's colourful production of The Jungle Book. The youngsters---many of whom were rambunctious Beavers and Cubs---were simply mesmerised by the lush jungle set, the amusing costumes and the high-energy musical numbers. Lucas Meeuse, an actor whose face is a marvellous Tom Cruise/Jim Carey mix, is delightful as the fish-out-of-water Mowgli, and Stephenos Cristou shines as both the ferocious Shere Khan and the proud-as-a-peacock buffoon Buldeo. This Jungle Book is the perfect introduction to theatre for young children. It's engaging, entertaining and also conveys a lovely message about accepting people's differences. And while it's not as sophisticated as some holiday shows, adults will be entertained both by the show itself and by the joy of the children around them.

To January 8, Neptune Theatre, 1593 Argyle Street, $34-$50, 429-7070
