The Tragically Hip

The Tragically Hip
The Tragically Hip is a national treasure. For the better part of two decades, trends have come and gone but the lineup and sound of the Hip have remained intact. After 10 studio albums and a single live album, this Kingston five-piece has bestowed upon us its cleverly titled greatest hits package Hipeponymous. The packaging alone is reason enough to pick up this limited edition box set. Inside you will find a 48-page booklet, a DVD of a 2004 show (That Night in Toronto), a video library DVD and double album loaded with Hip classics handpicked by fans. From the 37 tracks, 23 videos and 24 live tunes, you’ll be hard-pressed to find that something was omitted. As with any of these endeavours, arguments could be made to include a handful of more obscure tracks. The classic, inevitable tracks are present and accounted for (“New Orleans is Sinking,” “Little Bones,” “Fireworks”) as are a few nice surprises (“Gus: The Polar Bear from Central Park,” “Gift Shop” and “Escape is at Hand”) not to mention a pair of new tracks that bookend the CD set (“No Threat” and “The New Maybe”). The Hip have weathered the past 18 years incredibly well, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they decided to follow up their spring induction into the Canadian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by finally releasing a proper greatest hits package (Live Between Us was the closest they’ve come prior to this). After almost 20 years, it feels like the Hip are just hitting their stride and hopefully have many more years on that Canadian highway.
