When in full-out glam mode, Angelina Jolie tends to overwhelm her male co-stars with her sheer Angelina-ness. The Tourist sets Jolie, her taut face and inflated lips giving her the appearance of an absurdly beautiful Team America puppet, opposite Johnny Depp, her superior as an actor and her equal in charisma. But this great match is wasted in a tepid screwball action-comedy. Jolie plays an elegant mystery woman who draws Depp’s shy American, Frank Tupelo, into a false-identity scam to keep international cops and ruthless gangsters off the scent of her embezzling boyfriend. Frank drools over his new travel buddy, but Depp himself isn’t intimidated, and his winking performance almost redeems a movie that, with its over-reliance on implausible twists, crosses the line from fun to ridiculous. - Matt Semansky
