The Taming of the Shrew

When: July 6-Aug. 30, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $20 suggested donation, $25 reserved seat
It seems wrong to enjoy a play as misogynistic as Taming of the Shrew, but Shakespeare by the Sea’s straight-up retelling of the Bard’s discomfiting domestic abuse comedy is too entertaining to miss out on. This briskly paced production is directed by Jesse MacLean who packs it with crowd-pleasing physical comedy. The story centres on the pugnacious Kate (played with pitch-perfect attitude by Tringa Rexhepi) and her wily, forceful suitor Petruchio (Tom Smith, who makes the character both complex and comic) who sets about to tame his bride’s shrewish ways with some psychological manipulation. The high-energy high jinks of the cast (including a knock-out performance by James Maclean as Petruchio’s servant Grumio) get plenty of laughs. Although the subject matter is distasteful in our more enlightened society, there’s plenty to like in this energetic romp. —Kate Watson
