The entire, note-perfect---yes, even Gossip Girl Blake Lively---cast of the very good 2005 original has returned for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, including Amber “Joan of Arcadia” Tamblyn and Alexis “Rory Gilmore” Bledel. America “Ugly Betty” Ferrara’s ascension activated the actors’ contractual obligation to a sequel, and here, as Carmen, she mopes through another parental abandonment and a “surprise” move from backstage to headlining at summer stock. Bridget (Lively) digs up bones, and her past, in Turkey; Lena (Bledel) nurses a broken heart at art school and Tibby (Tamblyn) clerks at a New York video store.

There’s a slapped-togetherness about Saana Hamri’s Traveling Pants film, lacking the depth, humour and fine editing of Ken Kwapis’s original. And its PG rating is constrictive: When Tibby has a pregnancy scare, the condom is referred to as “it” and abortion is never considered.

But the movie does capture that post-high school period between friends moving on without one another, against wills individual and collective. It also sets up Lena’s irritating younger sister for a second sequel, but it’s time to put the Pants on the shelf for good: The magic has been spent.
