The Runaways

The Mercury Album Anthology (Mercury)

Perhaps the reason why Floria Sigismondi’s biopic The Runaways failed at the box office is the same reason why the band wasn’t more successful in the first place: Both were born into a world that caters, marketing-wise, to pimply teenage boys. But put aside the jailbait lyrics of “Cherry Bomb” and silly “Dead End Justice” and this 1970s all-girl group plays as hard as any band on today’s classic rock stations. Though lead guitarist Lita Ford and guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett achieved mainstream success after The Runaways dismantled, the live songs (from the infamous Japan tour) on this double album prove The Runaways were way more than eyeliner, platform boots and a marketing ploy.
