The Ring Rats’ Halifax screwjob

Let your inner wrestle fan rejoice with The Ring Rats wrestling riffs

Adrian Bruhm

“The concept of wrestling themes is so cool. Imagine if every time you entered a room, a custom-made song played that immediately let everyone know how awesome you are,” says Jake Thurgood, of Halifax's newest wrestling theme song cover band, The Ring Rats, “Life should be more like wrestling.”

With the tag-team power of Craig Hamlin, Matt Grace and Coleman Johnston, The Ring Rats will riff from upcoming digital EP, Ain’t We Great, Thursday night at Gus’ Pub, including their heavy version of the recently released, “Warrior,” which is easily one of the greatest wrestling themes of all time.

Ultimate Warrior’s metal anthem is just one of the thousands of jams by in-house WWF composers like Jim Johnston or Jimmy “The Mouth of the South” Hart, since the 1980s. Themes are instantly identifiable and often reflect pop music of the time. From the squeal of The Hart Foundation to the chime of The Undertaker to the Miami-groove of “Real American,” every wrestler's theme is unique and iconic.

“Themes do such an amazing job encapsulating a wrestler's entire character. When we play the Ultimate Warrior's theme, each one of us believes 100 percent that we are the Ultimate Warrior,” says Thurgood.

The Ring Rats play classics and some favourites, based on their own personal wrestle-manias, “But there’s something to love about every era,” Thurgood says. Wrestle theme songs are pure inspiration.

“We’re the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be,” says Grace. Amen, brothers.
