Tended to while sick by older stranger Hanna (Kate Winslet), 15-year-old Michael (David Kross) keeps visiting her apartment for non-commital sex. As Hanna has him read his schoolbooks to her, it's a high-minded stab at sensuality: literature as foreplay. Still, Daldry, adapting Bernhard Schlink's acclaimed novel, seems intent on winding through the strange forests of young experience. (MP)
