I hadn't been to Symphony Nova Scotia's The Nutcracker since my now-grown children were small, and I wondered if this production would seem as charming and entertaining without kids in tow. In short the answer is "yes." Tchaikovsky's music is gorgeous and it's a real treat to hear Symphony Nova Scotia play it. While the story has been changed somewhat from the familiar Hoffman tale, it maintains its magic. The set is ingenious, transforming from a bare-bones dormitory to a winter wonderland to a sumptuous drawing room decked with an art-deco tree. The dancers, who light up the stage with their grace and athleticism, are also called upon to manipulate some of Mermaid Theatre's memorable puppets, including a mesmerizing (and slightly scary) snake in the Arabian Dance. Although I discovered this show is not just for kids, I'd recommend taking some anyway. They'll love it.
