New Year's Eve with The Mellotones

Tue Dec 31, 7pm/9:30pm

The Mellotones are a staple of the Halifax live music scene, filling dance floors with R&B, soul and funk for over 20 years. From the band's standing Thursday at Bearly's to drawing sell-out crowds at the Rebecca Cohen while backing Matt Andersen, these dudes can make any room a party. For the second year in a row, the eight-piece is hosting a big New Year's Eve bash at the Cunard Centre. To mark the occasion, bassist Mike Farrington Jr. gave us the lowdown on his top five songs for counting down the new year:

Kris Kristofferson: "Sunday Morning Coming Down"
"It's the ultimate hangover song and it's perfect for the next day, it's about as dreary as you can get."

Otis Redding & Carla Thomas: "New Year's Resolution"
"A good back-and-forth duet, they're both trying to be better to each other in the new year which I think is pretty important. And it's Otis Redding, so you can't really wrong—and Carla Thomas."

J.J. Cale: "After Midnight"
"Another great dancing tune about all good and fun party things that usually happen after midnight, which people go after midnight on New Year's Eve."

Wilson Picket: "In the Midnight Hour"
"Great dance tune talking about doing stuff in the midnight hour. Very carnal sounding but still pretty PG-13. And it's just a beautiful groove."

Lizzo: "Juice"
"It's just a dance floor killer and it was kind of her year this year. It's pretty cool to look at the awards season and see Lizzo and Billie Eilish cleaning up and that people actually like their records."
