The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Wes Anderson

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Directed by: Wes Anderson
(Criterion)
Anderson’s quirky comedy was criminally underappreciated when released last year. Many critics seemed confounded by the subtle, oddball humour; a shame because the beauty and charm of the movie becomes more pronounced with repeat viewing. The multi-hinged plot centres on middle-aged oceanographer/adventurer Zissou (Bill Murray), launching what may be his last expedition to find a giant shark as his marriage and business flounder. Anderson and co-writer Noah Baumbach spring a reality familiar to fans of The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau — the myth of the intrepid scientific team, heroes to children everywhere, with matching Speedos and everything. The extra disc is packed with behind-the-scenes footage, including full acoustic performances of the David Bowie covers by Brazilian Seu Jorge, and an excellent interview with Mark Mothersbaugh, Devo-founder-turned-movie-composer and pug admirer. Make certain you seek out the two-disc edition, as certain franchise rental outlets are only offering a single disc version.
