The iVoting debate

To Tim Bousquet,

I was interested in reading your "iVote" feature about internet voting coming to Halifax (Sep. 18), and you did not disappoint.

I have worked many municipal and provincial/federal elections (as inside agent, poll clerk, DRO and supervisor) and have heard of the problems associated with internet voting. It's a scary path we walk down.

Many youth today, when I ask if they are going to vote, don't think their vote will make a difference. They seem disenfranchised or figure it's too hard to get registered to vote...so this might boost voter turnout.

I'm all for the election process we have now, where there are people in trusted positions monitoring the voting process. I'm in the IT industry doing security and know fully well how vulnerable the internet is.

I plan on trying internet voting. Funny thing, though---I have an unlocked rural mailbox from which anyone could pick up my mailed internet/phone voting info and PIN. Most of my neighbours could easily find my birthdate, too.
