The Hylozoists

La Nouvelle Gauche

The Hylozoists
La Nouvelle Gauche
(Boompa)
Though The Hylozoists has changed its lineup (Halifax bassist Lukas Pearse no longer works with the band) and it’s toured frequently (including an Atlantic Jazz Festival gig this year) in support of its second album Fin du Monde, this is the better record. The band’s third release, La Nouvelle Gauche is tougher, a little more rocked-up than the band’s sophomore release. Thus, arguably, it leaves more of an impression. There’s even more soul to this one, whereas Fin du Monde sacrificed that soulful feeling for more of a chamber-pop vibe. The success or failure of the band will come with album four; the big question now: which direction will it go?
