The Horrible Crowes

Elsie (SideOneDummy)

horrible-review.jpg
Brian Fallon is one of our best lyricists, but his voice has only recently caught up. Years of straining and growling working-class rock anthems with The Gaslight Anthem has sanded the edges off the bottom end, and in The Horrible Crowes, you can nearly call it lovely. Though TGA comprises half of this band---co-fronted by Ian Perkins---that outfit’s heartfelt ferocity only pops up periodically, on “Mary Ann” and “Go Tell Everybody.” Elsie is a slow-burning, steadily insistent record meant for late nights in headphones---lullabyes for barflies. “Baby, I ain’t lived a single day without you,” Fallon breathes at the end, and he’s the only man who could sell that line.
