The Good News About Armageddon

Steve McOrmond (Brick Books)

We’ve been talking about end times for so long---probably since the beginning of time---it’s lost its point. PEI native and Toronto-based poet Steve McOrmond’s titular work re-sharpens it. Across 38 pages, with curt and cutting writing, he reminds us the end of things, time, people, relationships, plans for a day or a life, the world, is all pre-programmed---the stuff of life is death. So take it easy, have a laugh (plenty here), let it happen, if so inclined, but don’t say you didn’t know. Or act accordingly, if so desired. This is underscored in the last lines of the last poem, “Envoi: “And to those who claimed it couldn’t be stopped/At every point along its path, the arrow is still. This is vital poetry.
