The Fiery Furnaces
(Rough Trade)
EP must mean Extra Pleasure, because it contains 10 songs of invention and excitement that never stop rewarding interest. For a mix of new tunes with leftovers from 2004’s Blueberry Boat, the flow is remarkable. Strange shifts between tracks are often topped by controlled chaos within a song, bizarre keyboards landing like interplanetary invaders. From the woodsman’s musings of “Ever-green” to the alliterative tom- foolery of “Sullivan’s Social Slub,” Fiery Furnaces defy musical gravity.
