The Fantasticks lives up to its name

Dartmouth Players shine with a strong cast and lots of laughs.

The theatre gods were certainly smiling down on Dartmouth Players when they assembled the fantastic cast of The Fantasticks. To a man (and woman), they are remarkable actors and singers who would not be out of place on any stage in the city. As the story's love-struck young couple, Justin Gavel and Tamara Fifield are utterly charming. Roy Ellis gives an award-worthy performance as the dark and mysterious El Gallo. Cameron Jones and Russell Storer effortlessly embody the comic figures of the fathers. Bryn Rowlands and Mike Durling get plenty of laughs as the buffoonish players. (And a well-deserved shout out goes to Sandi Montgomery in the important but thankless job as The Mute.) The music is lovely to listen to, especially since there's none of that "will they hit the note?" tension, and the lighting, costumes and simple, effective set all dazzle.

Wed-Sat to Nov. 27, Dartmouth Players Theatre, 33 Crichton Street, 8pm, $12-$15, 465-PLAY
