The control and precision with which two criminals, played by Eddie Marsan and Martin Compston, prepare a scruffy apartment for their capture of Alice Creed (Gemma Arterton) is in direct proportion to the inevitable unravelling of their Swiss-watch plan. But just because an audience can sense what is to come, that doesn’t mean that the film goes about its business in a predictable way. Disappearance features three essentially difficult characters, but concocts a thick mire of intrigue with tantalizing connections between the trio. –Hillary Titley
