The Black Keys

Magic Potion

The Black Keys
Magic Potion
(Nonesuch)
The riffs are large and meaty. Singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach has that ’70s-era vocal sound down pat (think Lynyrd Skynyrd). If you have an older sibling who played the likes of The Band, a tune from Magic Potion (“Good-bye Babylon”) will bring you back to your young and impressionable days. Similarly, “Just a Little Heat” emulates—well, let’s face it, imitates—Led Zeppelin II. The Black Keys, despite some reviewers’ efforts to say otherwise, basically try to do what The White Stripes do, but not nearly as well. The Keys’ Patrick Carney may drum harder than Meg, but Auerbach pales next to the sheer abandon of Jack, even if he himself plays the Zep card on occasion.
