Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not
In the UK, The Arctic Monkeys are the latest “It” band to hit the scene. The band’s rise to instant stardom started a few months back after someone leaked demos. As the demos got around and the ether-buzz grew, the Arctic Monkeys got tagged as the newest saviours of rock. It’s easy to see why the single “I Bet you Look Good on the Dancefloor” got a lot of attention — it’s scrappy, cheeky, slightly cocky and catchy in a garage-band-meets-Britpop way. But in the end, Whatever People, with its hyperbolic song titles and love of cigarettes, is a hit-and-miss affair, and overall, it’s nothing more than a promising first effort which might, yet again, show how hype can kill a radio star.
