To the editor,
Having noticed posters around town regarding an anti-Sunday-shopping demonstration this past weekend, I thought I might throw in my own two cents. I truly feel for those people who have found themselves disillusioned by the sudden demise of their idyllic Sundays, where no one works and there is rest and relaxation for all. However, as a food service worker for more than a decade, I feel I must point out that I have never had the luxury of a guaranteed Sunday off. Nor, I imagine, have thousands of other Nova Scotians who work as police officers, nurses, waiters, movie theatre attendants, strippers, convenience store clerks, hotel desk clerks, bellmen and room attendants and gas station attendants. For thousands of Nova Scotians, Sunday shopping means business as usual, the difference being we can now pick up some groceries on the way home from work. The concept of a required day of rest is wonderful, but it never was a reality.
