For years, Sue Uteck's obvious disdain for Peter Kelly has been written off as politicized---Uteck just wants to become mayor, so the story went. But events have clearly vindicated Uteck: Her low opinion of Kelly was dead-on. More, it's doubtful that Uteck would poll well outside her south end district, and she sensibly hasn't run for mayor, so the argument that she was aiming for that position is off-base.

Uteck gets major props for calling things as they are. If anything, her motion to censure and suspend Kelly for a week was too weak, but only two other councillors could find the backbone to confront the prime source of council dysfunction directly. Otherwise, Uteck toes a pro-development industry line---she was for the St. Pat's-Alexandra sale, and supported the Roy and Zeller's redevelopment projects. Significantly, however, she opposed moving Skye Halifax to a public hearing.

On the stadium, it's possible that her interest in redeveloping Huskies Stadium was Uteck's prime motivator, because she ended up voting against the project once it became clear Huskies wouldn't be the stadium of choice. That may have been a partisan decision, but it was the right one.
