Strange Adventures comic bookstore new location opening in Dartmouth

“I view myself as a Johnny Appleseed,” says comic store kingpin Cal Johnston “I’d like to travel the world opening comic stores.” And so he is---with his first new location in many years, which will be his third, counting his Fredericton store. You'll find Strange Adventures #3 at 101 Portland Street, 444-2140, and open on Saturday, June 19 at noon. Expect to have a number of comic creators in-store for signing, including local stars Steve McNiven, Darwyn Cooke and The Coast’s own Faith Erin Hicks. The new store will be cozy, only 500 square feet, and will feature plenty of older, vintage material and back issues, along with the new stuff. “I’m going back to my roots,” says Johnston, who says it feels like when he started his other stores, just him and a bunch of comics and toys. “I need the space, we have so many comics and nowhere to put them. It’s like I’ve moved my office to Dartmouth.” The opening falls on the day after Strange Adventures (Halifax) hosts its semi-regular Ladies Night, and the store also has a colouring contest on now, where the prize is $2,500 in gift certificates (visit and click on the blog).
