Starship troopers

To the editor,

Bruce Wark's editorial ("Shared vision," May 11) got me thinking…when is the public going to remove its collective head from its ass and realize that the main purpose for NASA (and space exploration in general) is to serve as a cover for weapons research and development? Do you really think government gives a shit how many moons are orbiting Pluto? I know I don't—at least not while people still sleep in cardboard boxes in the dead of winter. It's the romance of space as "the final frontier" that keeps the tax money flowing and the public mollified, but the veil is thin: I can't have been the only one to notice the name Lockheed Martin which flashed onscreen during the preview for Roving Mars. So the folks at Lockheed are just a bunch of poets and artists at heart, huh? Poets and artists whose income rests almost entirely on weapons manufacturing? Bullshit.
